Playing a Goulash Game

A Goulash hand is played at the following times during a game:
  • When no player has won the game
  • If East Wind makes three consecutive Mah Jong.  This player will then retain East Wind for the Goulash hand, after which it passes on to the next player.
  • After the East Wind has completed the first round.  A Goulash hand is played on a South Wind round.
  • On completion of a Round of the Wind, i.e: each time the game comes back to the original East Wind
  • For Every hand during the West Wind round
THE KITTY
To start a Goulash hand, each player places 100 points in the Kitty to be claimed by the outright winner. If a game is not completed another game is played and a further 100 points placed in the Kitty - and so on ...

To Commence a GOULASH hand
On completion of the building of the Wall, a Goulash hand is commenced by taking three tiles to exchange with each Wind - in the following order:

East Wind
               -   First exchange  ..................................................   West Wind
               -   Second exchange   .............................................   South Wind
               -   Third exchange  .................................................   North Wind

South Wind
                -   First exchange  ..................................................   North Wind
                -   Second exchange   ..............................................  East Wind
                -   Third exchange   .................................................  West Wind

West Wind
                -   First exchange   ..................................................   East Wind
                -   Second exchange   ..............................................   North Wind
                -   Third exchange  ..................................................   South Wind

North Wind
                -   First exchange  ....................................................   South Wind
                -   Second exchange   ...............................................   West Wind
                -   Third exchange   ...................................................   East Wind

After these exchanges are completed, there should be 9 tiles on the table.  These tiles are put back into the Wall to commence a dib-dab-dob.
A CHARLESTON - also known as a DIB-DAB-DOB
Each player takes three tiles from his hand and gives one tile to the other other players.

According to the hand held by East Wind, East may announce further exchanges into the Wall.

If East Wind decides to improve his/her hand, he/she can declare a further one or three exchanges to take place.

These exchanges are completed by all players into any wall except their own or the Flower Wall.  The tiles are concealed.  All the tiles taken from the Walls are replaced by the player's discards.

The game now proceeds with the following rules:
  • Each completed hand must have a minimum of 3 x doubles and must be of one suit (apart from a Major Tile hand).
  • The Goulash hand should be played as a 'straight' Mah Jong hand - ordinary Puns and Kongs but excluding Chows.
  • 2 of Bamboo can be used as a Wild Tile
